Introduction:

Intended use:
RIDASCREEN®FAST PSP SC is a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) and related algae toxins in mussels.

General information:
PSP is a potential neurotoxin that occurs in various algae (Gonyaulax-species).
Over the food chain it could reach mussels and therefore, PSP is mainly responsible for the high toxicity of some mussels. PSP is responsible for respiratory paralysis, which leads to death in approx. 8 % of cases (PSP blocks the sodium ion channels in nerve and muscle membranes). The lethal dose in humans is 1 to 3 mg. Numbness and respiratory paralysis can occur already after oral ingestion of as little as 0.5 - 1.0 μg PSP.
An established and reliable detection method for these algae toxins has been the
"mouse mean death time bioassay“. The limitations of this procedure are the high
variability of the results and low sensitivity (approx. 37 μg PSP/100 g of sample).
This low sensitivity is particularly problematic given the allowable limits of 40 and
80 μg PSP/100 g of sample respectively set by the individual member states of the EU. In addition, this method is to be critically reconsidered from the animal protection point of view.

Specifications:
Format:Microtiter plate with 48 wells (6 strips with 8 removable wells each)
Standards:Only standard 1 (0 ppb) is included in the test kit. The standard curve (B/B0) is provided with the certificate of the test kit.
Sample preparation: washing, homogenization, boiling with HCl,
centrifugation and dilution
Incubation time:30 min
Detection limit: 50 ppb
Cross-reactions: The specificity of the RIDASCREEN®FAST PSP SC assay was established by analyzing the cross reactivity to the corresponding toxins. Because of the fact, that pure standard substances are not available, a contamination of the corresponding toxins with PSP is possible. Therefore, the results obtained indicate approx. the mentioned or less cross reactivities.
PSP: 100 %
